Once in a Blue Moon

The Blue Moon is the second full moon in a single calendar month. This only happens 15 times in 20 years!  This however is not a natural manifestation, but rather a human decision to note this phenomenon.   In fact our own Gregorian Calendar has major deficiencies related to the moon cycles as it focuses on solar cycles instead.  The Romans added two extra months to commemorate their Caesars, i.e. Augustus Caesar, “August” and Julius Caesar,“July.”  The months following them were not renamed just moved back in the year, thus we have September through December which translate as the seventh through the tenth months. The addition of July and August forced a deviation from lunar cycles. Some examples of calendars that focus solely on the lunar calendar are the Islamic and the Jewish calendars.  Check out the full moon tonight if you are out of the fog.
